BOAT-COMPARATOR Guide
Cap d'Agde by boat: Fort Brescou, black cliffs and open blue
Renting a boat at Cap d'Agde: Fort Brescou, the volcanic cliffs of La Grande Conque, La Tamarissière — the volcano that dips into the Mediterranean.
Cap d'Agde is a volcano taking a swim: Mont Saint-Loup flowed down to the sea, leaving black basalt cliffs and an island fortress offshore. Surprising waters, served by one of Languedoc's major marinas.
Fort Brescou and La Grande Conque
A mile off the cape, Fort Brescou holds its volcanic islet — circle the island and anchor nearby in fair weather. Beneath the cliffs, La Grande Conque beach and its black sand make the coast's most original scenery: dark basalt, clear water, volcanic organ pipes.
Towards the Hérault and La Tamarissière
Westwards, the mouth of the Hérault leads up to black-stone Agde (the fortified basalt cathedral deserves the river detour, at walking pace) and the pine-lined Tamarissière beach. Eastwards, the long Roquille beach runs towards Marseillan and the Thau entrance.
Waters and weather
An open coast: the sea breeze raises short chop in the afternoon, the tramontane flattens everything close in. Morning remains the golden window, and Fort Brescou is approached in calm seas only.
Budget
Languedoc prices: license-free €80-160, RIB €180-350, motorboat €230-450 per day. A large local fleet and hard competition: spreads between platforms on the same boat justify ten seconds of comparison.
