Renting with or without a skipper: how to choose

Price, license, life on board: the real criteria to decide whether to hire a skipper for your boat rental.

It is the second structural choice after the boat itself — and it changes everything: the budget, the mood on board, and how much of the coast you will actually see.

Without a skipper: freedom (and responsibility)

You drive, you set the plan, you anchor where you please. You will need the appropriate license for anything above 6 hp in France, and the base may require proven experience for larger units. The deposit is your responsibility: a scratched keel or a lost anchor comes out of it.

With a skipper: a day without the mental load

For €150–350 per day, a local professional drives, picks anchorages according to the day's weather, knows the swell-free cove and the restaurant that still has a table. On yachts and most catamarans a skipper is mandatory anyway. On board, you are a guest — it is a different trip.

The budget question, honestly

On a €600 day rental for 8 people, the skipper adds roughly €25–40 per person. Against what they bring (safety, spots, zero stress in the marina), it is the option we recommend to anyone stepping aboard for the first time.

How to filter on Boat-Comparator

The "Skipper" selector shows With (skipper included or added to the total) or Without (I drive) — which excludes boats where a skipper is imposed. Each offer's details state what is included.
