Boat Rental in Cannes: the Complete Guide
Boat rental in Cannes: the Lérins islands licence-free, RIB runs to the Estérel, evening sails and day yacht charter — programmes, season and budget.
Few harbours offer as many different programmes as Cannes: an archipelago twenty minutes from the quay, a spectacular red coastline to the west, a legendary cape to the east, and a fleet that runs from small licence-free boats to crewed yachts. Here is how to choose, according to your plans and your budget.
The cruising ground: Lérins, Estérel, Cap d'Antibes
The heart of the game is the Lérins islands: Sainte-Marguerite with its fort, Saint-Honorat with its abbey, separated by a channel of clear water where boats anchor for lunch. To the west, the Gulf of la Napoule opens onto the red calanques of the Estérel, towards Théoule and the Pointe de l'Aiguille. To the east, the bay of Golfe-Juan and a lap of Cap d'Antibes make a fine half-day. Departures are from the Vieux-Port or Port Canto.
The shallow plateau between the two islands is the busiest anchorage on this coast: arrive before late morning to pick your spot, and keep the fairway clear for the shuttle boats. In a mistral or a sustained westerly, the south side of Sainte-Marguerite offers reasonable shelter; in an established easterly, favour the bay of Golfe-Juan instead.
Licence-free: the Lérins within reach
This is the most accessible programme: in France, a licence-free boat (engine capped at 6 hp, daytime navigation, defined zone) is enough to reach the Lérins in calm weather and enjoy the anchorage. Expect 100–250 € per day. Browse licence-free boat rental in Cannes and our guide to boat trips to the Lérins islands to plan the day.
RIB, motorboat or sailboat: the typical day
With a RIB (200–600 € per day) you can combine the Lérins in the morning and the Estérel calanques in the afternoon. A motorboat (250–900 € per day) puts comfort first: sundeck, deck shower, family on board. A sailboat (300–700 € per day) comes into its own late in the day, once the thermal breeze is established and the bay empties out.
Day yacht charter
Cannes is one of the great bases for day yacht charter: expect from 2,500 € per day, with a skipper all but mandatory (150–350 € per day, often included in crewed offers). Our guide to day yacht charter on the French Riviera details what is included — and what is not.
When to book and at what price
The season runs from April to October; June and September are the most pleasant months, and the big Cannes events tighten availability in spring. For an identical boat, platforms show gaps of 10–25 %, with service fees of 0 to 9 %: Boat-Comparator compares their offers live, with no affiliation to any of them. Cancellation policies vary by rental company — check each listing.
