When to sail in Sardinia

August (Ferragosto) is the Italian peak: Sardinia and the Amalfi coast book months ahead. May–June and September are ideal.

In the north: Olbia, the Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena

Olbia is the gateway to boat rental in Sardinia: an international airport, deep marinas, and the two star playgrounds within day range — the Costa Smeralda from Porto Cervo to Porto Rotondo, and above all the La Maddalena archipelago, whose turquoise channels between Budelli, Spargi and Caprera rival any lagoon. Note: the archipelago is a national park and boat access requires a paid permit, usually handled or billed by the operator — check the line in your contract.

In the south and west: Cagliari, Villasimius, Alghero

The south plays a different tune: out of Cagliari or Villasimius, the coast strings together the Costa Rei coves and the Capo Carbonara reserve, in water that concedes nothing to the north — with noticeably fewer crowds and gentler prices. To the west, Alghero opens onto the Capo Caccia cliffs and Neptune's Grotto, one of the most spectacular seascapes in Italy.
