What Click&Boat does well
Coverage, first of all. In our internal audit of 8 July 2026 across 103 destinations, Click&Boat listed boats in 102 of them: one of the broadest footprints on the market, from small Breton harbours to Greek marinas. The choice follows the same logic, from licence-free boats to crewed yachts, via day-hire RIBs and week-long sailboat charters. The booking journey is well drilled: built-in messaging with the owner, clear booking requests, and some listings bookable instantly. The filters make it quick to sort through what can be an abundant offer. In popular harbours at high season, that breadth translates into real alternatives rather than a take-it-or-leave-it choice.
Where it falls short
Like any marketplace mixing professional and private owners, the quality of your experience depends first on the person handing you the keys. The same harbour can host immaculate listings and rather looser ones: read the reviews and ask your questions before paying. That reflex is backed by research on peer-to-peer marketplaces: a 2016 study by Ert, Fleischer and Magen in Tourism Management found that trust signals travellers perceive — reviews, photos, an owner's reputation — often weigh more heavily in the decision than the listed price (study on Google Scholar). Service fees vary from one offer to the next — across platforms we observe a range of 0 to 9% — and only show in full at checkout, so always judge on the final price. Cancellation policy, likewise, varies with each owner; check it on every listing rather than assuming a single rule.
Who it is the right choice for
Click&Boat is an excellent starting point when you want choice in a specific destination: a motorboat or RIB for the day, a family outing, or a more ambitious cruise. Its depth of listings also makes it a good place to weigh several owners in the same port against each other. Keep one reflex, though: on the very same boat, we regularly observe price gaps of 10 to 25% between platforms. Skipping the comparison sometimes means paying that premium without knowing it. Groups will also find a genuine choice of motorboats and day catamarans, and organised holidaymakers will appreciate being able to lock in the most sought-after summer dates early. What this table doesn't show at a glance — but what we verified on each platform's own help pages — is that cancellation doesn't work the same way everywhere. On SamBoat, the owner picks one of four policies (Flexible, Zen, Moderate, or a custom policy reserved for professionals); under Zen, the most common one, the owner keeps 30% of the rental if you cancel five days or more before departure, and 100% if you cancel later — service fees themselves are never refunded either way. Click&Boat has a feature unique to this market: the Weather Guarantee, limited to day rentals, which refunds you in full (as a one-year voucher) once the owner approves a weather-related cancellation, with disputes settled against International Maritime Organization criteria. Boataround, unlike the three marketplaces, advertises a platform-wide free-cancellation guarantee rather than leaving it entirely to the owner — while still telling renters to double-check each listing's own terms. GlobeSailor, finally, runs more like a classic charter contract: what you get back depends on which contractual milestone you've already reached (signing, deposit, balance) rather than a simple day countdown.
One rule beats everything else: at comparable coverage, never judge an offer on its headline price alone. The real total (boat plus service fees) commonly swings 10 to 25% between platforms for the same boat — a pattern the academic literature on online markets backs up too: a 2000 study by Brynjolfsson and Smith in Management Science found that easy price comparison online does not eliminate meaningful price dispersion between sellers, even for comparable goods (see the study on Google Scholar).
Deposit: a card pre-authorisation rather than an actual charge
For a booking with a private owner, Click&Boat does not block the deposit as hard cash but as a card pre-authorisation taken at checkout: your card is pre-authorised for the amount shown on the listing — on average €1,000 to €3,000, from €300 for a licence-free boat up to over €5,000 for a sailboat or catamaran — with no actual charge or movement on your account. The sum is only debited if damage is found and documented (contract, handover report, photos, invoices); with a professional owner, that owner handles the deposit directly under their own terms. To reduce this exposure, Click&Boat offers, through its partner Assur-travel, an excess-waiver insurance you can take out up to 24 hours before departure (cancellable up to 14 days after subscribing): it costs 4 to 8% of the rental amount depending on the deposit and the rental length. Renting in September on Click&Boat
The September shift changes the maths for Click&Boat as much as for any other platform: the Mediterranean stays at its warmest temperature of the year, the August crowds thin out, and the rates listed by owners generally drop 25 to 35% below peak-summer prices.
