License-free boating in Cannes: the local waters

In Cannes, a licence-free boat has one obvious destination: the Lérins islands, barely a nautical mile off Pointe Croisette. From the Vieux Port or Port Canto, allow twenty to thirty minutes to anchor off the north shore of Sainte-Marguerite, circle Saint-Honorat and its working monastery, or settle in the Plateau du Milieu channel between the two islands, where the water rivals a lagoon.

The permitted area is usually the bay of Cannes plus the islands — some operators allow Théoule in calm weather. Around the Lérins, speed is capped at 5 knots and you must anchor on sand, never in the seagrass. With an easterly blowing, the crossing from the Croisette gets choppy: leave early in the morning while the water is still smooth and the best anchorages are free. Reckon on 100–250 € a day for a 6 hp boat.

When to sail in Cannes
