What SamBoat does well
Its most measurable strength is coverage: in our internal audit of 8 July 2026 across 103 destinations, SamBoat was present in 102 of them, neck and neck with the best. The range of boats is just as wide: licence-free boats for a first outing, RIBs and motorboats by the day, sailboats and catamarans by the week. Where it falls short
SamBoat is not exempt from the rules of the marketplace model. The reliability of a listing depends on the owner, private or professional, and the gap between a polished page and reality on the pontoon exists here as everywhere: previous renters' reviews remain your best filter, along with a frank exchange of messages before you commit — a 2016 study by Ert, Fleischer and Magen in Tourism Management found that, on peer-to-peer marketplaces, exactly these trust signals (reviews, photos, an owner's reputation) often outweigh the listed price in the booking decision (study on Google Scholar). Service fees sit within the 0 to 9% range we observe across all platforms, with the amount varying by offer — so compare totals, not headline prices. As for cancellation, the policy varies with each owner: check every listing before paying anything. One last point of vigilance, common to the whole market: at the very peak of the season the best boats go quickly, and the listings left over do not always reflect the platform's average quality — booking ahead remains your best protection.
Who it is the right choice for
SamBoat particularly suits those after a simple, well-priced rental: a family day out from a Mediterranean harbour, a RIB with friends, a first licence-free experience. What this table doesn't show at a glance — but what we verified on each platform's own help pages — is that cancellation doesn't work the same way everywhere. On SamBoat, the owner picks one of four policies (Flexible, Zen, Moderate, or a custom policy reserved for professionals); under Zen, the most common one, the owner keeps 30% of the rental if you cancel five days or more before departure, and 100% if you cancel later — service fees themselves are never refunded either way. Click&Boat has a feature unique to this market: the Weather Guarantee, limited to day rentals, which refunds you in full (as a one-year voucher) once the owner approves a weather-related cancellation, with disputes settled against International Maritime Organization criteria. Boataround, unlike the three marketplaces, advertises a platform-wide free-cancellation guarantee rather than leaving it entirely to the owner — while still telling renters to double-check each listing's own terms. GlobeSailor, finally, runs more like a classic charter contract: what you get back depends on which contractual milestone you've already reached (signing, deposit, balance) rather than a simple day countdown.
One rule beats everything else: at comparable coverage, never judge an offer on its headline price alone. The real total (boat plus service fees) commonly swings 10 to 25% between platforms for the same boat — a pattern the academic literature on online markets backs up too: a 2000 study by Brynjolfsson and Smith in Management Science found that easy price comparison online does not eliminate meaningful price dispersion between sellers, even for comparable goods (see the study on Google Scholar).
Deposit: a €500 minimum, waiver available from €30
On SamBoat, the deposit isn't set by the platform but by each owner on their own listing, with a floor of €500: expect around €2,000 for a 6-metre RIB, and €5,000 to €8,000 for a 40-foot sailboat. Rather than blocking that whole amount on your card, SamBoat has offered, since 2025, a "damage waiver" that covers the entire deposit at stake regardless of the owner's actual contractual excess: if damage occurs, you're left with a residual excess of 10% of the damage amount (€200 minimum), capped at €5,000 in cover. Renting in September on SamBoat
SamBoat's broad day-hire and licence-free coverage suits the September shift particularly well: this is a season where the smart move is booking 2 to 4 weeks ahead rather than the day before. The Mediterranean holds its warmest temperature of the year in September, harbours empty out, and rates observed among owners generally fall 25 to 35% below August prices.
