Click&Boat

The European leader for peer-to-peer and professional rentals: very deep inventory in France, from license-free boats to yachts, plus turnkey "experiences" (island day trips, sunset cruises…). SamBoat

Boataround

The charter specialist (sailboats and catamarans by the week), unbeatable in Croatia and Greece: firm prices for your dates, clear cancellation terms, professional fleets. It is also the only one of the four exposing dated public prices — Boat-Comparator shows them as-is. More focused coverage (67/103 destinations), consistent with its charter positioning. GlobeSailor

The two American giants. Impressive worldwide catalogue, but patchier European coverage. They will join the Boat-Comparator comparison as partnership agreements land.

The comparison table: coverage, fees and cancellation

Here is what actually sets the four platforms Boat-Comparator compares every day apart, based on our own figures.

What this table doesn't show at a glance — but what we verified on each platform's own help pages — is that cancellation doesn't work the same way everywhere. On SamBoat, the owner picks one of four policies (Flexible, Zen, Moderate, or a custom policy reserved for professionals); under Zen, the most common one, the owner keeps 30% of the rental if you cancel five days or more before departure, and 100% if you cancel later — service fees themselves are never refunded either way. Click&Boat has a feature unique to this market: the Weather Guarantee, limited to day rentals, which refunds you in full (as a one-year voucher) once the owner approves a weather-related cancellation, with disputes settled against International Maritime Organization criteria. Boataround, unlike the three marketplaces, advertises a platform-wide free-cancellation guarantee rather than leaving it entirely to the owner — while still telling renters to double-check each listing's own terms. GlobeSailor, finally, runs more like a classic charter contract: what you get back depends on which contractual milestone you've already reached (signing, deposit, balance) rather than a simple day countdown.

One rule beats everything else: at comparable coverage, never judge an offer on its headline price alone. The real total (boat plus service fees) commonly swings 10 to 25% between platforms for the same boat — a pattern the academic literature on online markets backs up too: a 2000 study by Brynjolfsson and Smith in Management Science found that easy price comparison online does not eliminate meaningful price dispersion between sellers, even for comparable goods (see the study).

Deposits: four different logics

The listed price and service fees don't tell the whole story: there's still the security deposit, the sum blocked or paid as a guarantee for the rental's duration — and it varies sharply between platforms. On Click&Boat, it is a card imprint of €1,000 to €3,000 depending on the boat, only charged if damage is documented. SamBoat starts from a €500 floor and commonly climbs to €5,000-8,000 for a 40-foot sailboat, with an optional deposit-waiver insurance from €30 (10% excess on the claim, €200 minimum, capped at €5,000). Boataround, in weekly sailing charter, lists higher deposits (around €2,000 for a standard sailboat) and offers a flat-cost deposit-insurance add-on, around €300, as an alternative to blocking the full amount. GlobeSailor indexes its deposit on the boat's size — around €1,000 for a RIB, €4,000 to €10,000 for a catamaran or yacht — with a franchise buyback of 4 to 8% of the rental amount, or a full deposit buyback since 2025. Two offers at an identical price are therefore not equivalent if one blocks €800 on your card and the other €5,000: fold this into the comparison, not just the listed price. Renting in September: the gap narrows but doesn't close

September changes the picture for all four platforms at once: the Mediterranean stays at its warmest temperature of the year, the August crowds thin out, and rates observed across operators generally drop 25 to 35% below peak-summer prices. The best dates stay reachable 2 to 4 weeks before departure rather than at the very last minute, leaving time to compare calmly instead of booking under pressure. The 10-25% price gap between platforms on the same boat does not disappear in the shoulder season — if anything, it matters more on a tighter budget.
