When to sail on the French Riviera

Peak season runs July–August: book early on the Riviera and in Corsica. Spring and September bring calmer seas and gentler prices.

What a day actually costs, port by port

Our readings from 5 to 11 September 2026, for a departure thirty days out and across all platforms, cover all 24 bases on the coast. The spread is huge: the median comes out at €291 per day in Porquerolles (31 offers) and €308 in Saint-Mandrier (41 offers), against €2,731 in Monaco (35 offers) and €2,480 in Saint-Tropez (47 offers). That is a factor of nine along a single 150-kilometre shoreline — not because the same boat costs nine times more, but because the fleet on offer differs: the western Var ports list motorboats and RIBs, Monaco and Saint-Tropez list yachts.

The clearest case involves two ports in the same bay. On motorboats, the median is €398 in Mandelieu-la-Napoule (39 offers) and €802 in Cannes (20 offers): double, for the same water and the same gulf. Always check the actual boarding port before comparing two listings — on this coast it is the heaviest variable, often more so than the date.

Pick the category before you pick the port

The RIB is the most uniform category on the Riviera: across the ten bases where we record at least eight offers, the median runs from €267 in Six-Fours-les-Plages to €562 in Port-Grimaud, a range of barely one to two. That is where switching port pays least, and where comparing platforms pays most.

Motorboats spread far wider — €291 in Fréjus (11 offers) against €2,296 in Monaco (16 offers) — and yachts wider still: €1,785 in Saint-Raphaël (only 3 offers, so treat it as an order of magnitude) against €7,995 in Saint-Tropez (16 offers) and €7,200 in Monaco (9 offers). For a yacht in Cannes, the recorded median is €5,980 across 11 offers. On the license-free side, only Antibes gives a usable sample (€186 median across 8 offers); elsewhere our September readings count one to three listings per port, too few for a median — we would rather say so than publish a fragile figure.

Anchoring without damage: light sand, never the dark patches

A study by Thomas Bockel and colleagues, published in 2024 in Ocean & Coastal Management, analysed 225,470 anchoring events recorded along the French Mediterranean coast between 2010 and 2022, nearly 96,000 of them by boats under 24 metres — precisely the size of rental units. Until now only large yachts, traceable by transponder, were monitored; the authors show that small craft measurably degrade Posidonia meadows too, with significantly higher fragmentation where they anchor.
