A lagoon village where every house has its own berth

Port-Grimaud is an inhabited marina: the village conceived by François Spoerry lines up kilometres of private quays, and Port Grimaud itself sits 500 m from the centre (OpenStreetMap records). Around it, the density is exceptional for the head of a gulf: Port Cogolin at 700 m, Marines de Cogolin at 1.1 km, Port du Pilon at 4.3 km, and above all the Port de Saint-Tropez at 4.8 km — a quarter of an hour at sea, no more. Port de Sainte-Maxime lies 6.3 km away on the far shore. Further south: Port Privé de Cavalaire and Port de San Peire (11.6 km), Port Heraclea (11.7 km), Port Tonic (14.6 km) and Port Ferréol (14.9 km). The head of the gulf is shallow and carpeted with seagrass: that is where anchoring costs something. A study by Patrice Francour, Adrien Ganteaume and Marion Poulain, published in 1999 in Aquatic Conservation and carried out in the Port-Cros national park — some forty kilometres from here — measured that a single anchoring cycle destroys an average of 34 Posidonia shoots, the more so where the matte is loose (see the study).
