What Boataround does well
Its home ground is the sailboat and catamaran chartered by the week from professional fleets. Where it falls short
The trade-off is mechanical: coverage. In our internal audit of 8 July 2026 across 103 destinations, Boataround was present in only 67 of them, against 101 or 102 for the three generalists. That is the assumed profile of a specialist: few or no licence-free boats, few day trips by RIB, an offer concentrated on charter waters. Add the rules that apply everywhere: service fees within the 0 to 9% range we observe across the market, and a cancellation policy that varies with each operator — check it on every listing. Bear in mind, too, the side costs specific to chartering: deposits are often substantial, and provisioning and berthing need planning.
Who it is the right choice for
Boataround is aimed first at sailors heading off for a week or more under sail: a bareboat with or without a qualified skipper, a family catamaran in the Balearics, a monohull with friends in the Greek islands. If your plan is a motorboat day out or a licence-free rental, the generalists will almost always have more to offer. In between, the day-charter catamaran case depends heavily on the destination: check it port by port rather than assuming either way.

What this table doesn't show at a glance — but what we verified on each platform's own help pages — is that cancellation doesn't work the same way everywhere. On SamBoat, the owner picks one of four policies (Flexible, Zen, Moderate, or a custom policy reserved for professionals); under Zen, the most common one, the owner keeps 30% of the rental if you cancel five days or more before departure, and 100% if you cancel later — service fees themselves are never refunded either way. Click&Boat has a feature unique to this market: the Weather Guarantee, limited to day rentals, which refunds you in full (as a one-year voucher) once the owner approves a weather-related cancellation, with disputes settled against International Maritime Organization criteria. Boataround, unlike the three marketplaces, advertises a platform-wide free-cancellation guarantee rather than leaving it entirely to the owner — while still telling renters to double-check each listing's own terms. GlobeSailor, finally, runs more like a classic charter contract: what you get back depends on which contractual milestone you've already reached (signing, deposit, balance) rather than a simple day countdown.
One rule beats everything else: at comparable coverage, never judge an offer on its headline price alone. The real total (boat plus service fees) commonly swings 10 to 25% between platforms for the same boat — a pattern the academic literature on online markets backs up too: a 2000 study by Brynjolfsson and Smith in Management Science found that easy price comparison online does not eliminate meaningful price dispersion between sellers, even for comparable goods (see the study on Google Scholar).
Deposit: insurance rather than a fixed scale
On Boataround, the deposit is not a flat amount set by the platform but a figure each owner sets on their own listing — for a standard cruising sailboat it commonly runs around €2,000, and climbs higher for catamarans and larger boats. Rather than a percentage-based excess waiver like GlobeSailor's, Boataround offers a fixed-cost "deposit insurance", typically around €300, which replaces blocking the full deposit on your card: if damage occurs, it's this insurance you forfeit rather than the entire deposit. It needs to be taken out before departure — check the exact deadline on your booking, as some operators require it the day before at the latest. For a week-long charter, September is often the best trade-off of the year on Boataround: the professional fleet stays close to full strength after the August peak, the sea keeps its warmest temperature, and rates observed among operators generally drop 25 to 35% below high-summer prices. The best dates still open up 2 to 4 weeks before departure, far from the scramble of a genuine last-minute booking.
