Thirteen marinas within ten kilometres: the best-equipped roadstead of our bases

The old basin is 400 metres away, Port Saint-Louis 1.2 km, Port du Manteau 3.2 km, then Saint-Mandrier, La Seyne-sur-Mer and Le Mourillon all sit at 4.1 km, Pin Rolland and its 350 berths at 4.4 km, Saint-Elme at 5.1 km, Les Oursinières at 8.1 km, Le Brusc at 11.3 km, Port Saint-Pierre des Embiez at 12.5 km and Bandol at 14.3 km: 13 marinas within the first ten kilometres, and 72 in all inside the 60 km radius (OpenStreetMap records), the 15th densest of our 183 bases. That concentration has a downside: the bay's sediments still carry the legacy of antifouling paints. A study by Frédérique Pougnet and colleagues, published in 2014 in Environmental Science and Pollution Research, measured tributyltin levels ranging from under 0.5 to 2,700 ng/g depending on the site — four orders of magnitude apart, peaking near the shipyards and decreasing towards the open sea; two lead-210 dated cores place the contamination peak in the 1970s, and the authors expect it to persist for "several centuries" in the anoxic sediments. One more reason not to plough the bottom at anchor in the inner harbour, and to prefer mooring buoys and the clear sandy bottoms off the Saint-Mandrier peninsula or the Embiez. September: +23% on the face of it, but a catalogue that changed shape
