No-licence boating in Toulon bay: the guide

The great roadstead of Toulon by no-licence boat: Tamaris, Les Sablettes, Saint-Mandrier, sheltered anchorages and naval no-go zones. A practical guide.

Toulon bay is one of Europe's largest natural roadsteads, and its southern part, the great roadstead, offers fine ground for a no-licence boat: relatively sheltered water, beaches and small harbours within a 6 hp boat's reach. This guide shows you where to go without getting into trouble, and Boat-Comparator helps you compare local offers with no affiliation to any platform.

The setting in the bay

French no-licence boating is capped at 6 hp (4.5 kW), by day, within a zone set by the operator. At 5 knots your 2 to 5 mile radius covers most of the great roadstead from a base on the Seyne or Tamaris side. Note that the inner roadstead, to the north, holds the naval port, with clearly marked and monitored no-navigation zones. Operators cap the zone accordingly — respect the markers scrupulously and never cut a corner.

Tamaris, Les Sablettes, Saint-Mandrier

On the west side, Tamaris and its corniche offer quiet water and easy anchorages over sand. Les Sablettes beach, on the tombolo of the Saint-Mandrier peninsula, is a classic swim stop, with sand and shallow water, ideal for families. Pushing on to Saint-Mandrier, the little harbour and its sheltered coves are worth the detour for a quiet lunch. It makes an ideal day loop, entirely within the great roadstead and with no exposed crossing. History buffs can spot from the water the forts guarding the entrance to the roadstead, reminders of a military past that is still very much alive today. On a clear day the view stretches to Mont Faron rising behind the city, a fine backdrop for lunch at anchor.

Wind, traffic and no-go zones

The westerly mistral funnels into the bay and raises a sharp chop; in strong wind, stay on the better-sheltered west side and avoid the more exposed middle of the roadstead. Watch the commercial traffic and shuttles, which are numerous and have priority, and keep well clear of their track. And always keep the restricted naval zones in mind: never go near them, not even for a photo. Leave in the morning to cruise in calm before the afternoon breeze.
