Between the price shown on a listing and the amount actually charged, there is often one discreet line: the service fee. Across the four platforms Boat-Comparator compares every day — with no affiliation to any of them — we observe a range running from 0 to 9% depending on platform and offer. Here is how to read that line, and above all how to build it into your comparison. None of this makes the platforms poor value — it simply means the advertised price is the start of the calculation, not the end of it.
What the fees pay for
Service fees pay for what the platform actually provides: secure online payment, the connection with the owner, messaging, assistance if a dispute arises and, in some cases, additional guarantees. They do not pay for the boat itself — the owner sets that price. Two listings with the same base rate can therefore end up at different totals once fees are applied. It is also why the same operator listed on several platforms can show different totals for identical services.
Why the range runs from 0 to 9%
Each platform applies its own scale, which can vary with the type of boat, the duration or the booking channel; some offers carry no fee at all, others sit near the top of the range. That variability makes headline prices misleading: the full amount often only appears at the payment step. Add the fact that, on the same boat, we routinely record gaps of 10 to 25% between platforms, and the conclusion writes itself: only comparing totals, fees included, means anything.
The method for comparing the real price
Take each offer through to the summary screen without paying, and note the exact total. Then check what that total does not cover: fuel, almost always extra, the security deposit, and any add-ons (skipper, cleaning, a berth at your destination). Finally, since cancellation policy varies with each owner, read it on every offer: a slightly dearer but cancellable total can be the better choice. Why fees are shown separately rather than folded into the price
This split is no technical accident. A study by Morwitz, Greenleaf and Johnson, published in 1998 in the Journal of Marketing Research, shows that a "partitioned" price — a base amount displayed separately from a mandatory surcharge — lowers the total cost that buyers recall from memory and increases their purchase intention, compared with a strictly identical all-inclusive price (see the study on Google Scholar). Nothing suggests boat rental platforms exploit this bias deliberately, but the mechanism explains why the gap between the headline price and the real total rarely closes in your favour if you skip the payment screen.
Service fees in September: don't drop your guard
Over the September window, rental rates generally fall 25 to 35% below August prices, with availability staying open 2 to 4 weeks before departure rather than at the very last minute. Service fees, however, don't follow that drop: the 0 to 9% range stays the same all year, calculated on a base amount that will simply be lower. On a budget tightened by the back-to-school period, those few percentage points weigh just as much proportionally as they do in August — a reflex worth keeping even as the boat's own price becomes more attractive. What to remember
