Gruissan by boat: Les Ayguades, Saint-Martin island and La Clape

Renting a boat in Gruissan: the coast beneath the La Clape massif, the stilt chalets, the lagoons — the 'Betty Blue' spirit, sea side.

Its stilt chalets got their film ('Betty Blue'); its waters deserve one too: Gruissan, wedged between the La Clape massif and its lagoons, offers the wildest coast in Languedoc.

The La Clape coast

North of the harbour, the La Clape massif drops into the sea in limestone coves (Les Ayguades, Saint-Pierre) — a rocky anomaly in sand country, with clear water sheltered from the tramontane. South, the chalets beach and its skyline of stilt cabins, then La Vieille Nouvelle, a wild strand between sea and salt flat.

Lagoons and salt flats

The Gruissan lagoon and the Grazel canal link village to sea: gentle motoring beneath the Barberousse tower, flamingos in the pink salt pans. The lagoons suit small craft at reduced speed — license-free paradise.

Wind: tramontane country

Gruissan is one of Europe's wind spots (windsurfers know): when the tramontane sets in, the motor outing postpones or shelters in the lagoons. On calm days the water is a mirror — check the forecast before booking and favour flexible cancellation.

Budget

Among the gentlest prices on the coast: license-free €70-150, RIB €170-320. Gruissan, Narbonne-Plage and Port-la-Nouvelle share these waters — and September is sumptuous here, the golden La Clape vineyards as a backdrop.
