License-free boating in Zadar: the local waters

The Zadar archipelago, a maze of islands between Ugljan and Dugi Otok leading towards the Kornati, is best explored from the city or Borik marinas, a few cables from the old town. The Telašćica nature park and its cliffs, the Kornati national park (entry ticket required) and Sakarun beach on Dugi Otok make up the classic day-trip triptych.

One thing worth knowing before booking: unlike France or Greece, Croatia has no true bareboat "license-free" option — a recognised title (the French coastal license, for instance) or a skipper on board is mandatory for any motorboat, whatever its power. Local operators mostly offer trips with a professional skipper instead, an easy way to see the Kornati without steering yourself. On the water, the real local force is the Velebit channel bora, the most feared wind in the Adriatic: it can rise within minutes outside summer, while the summer maestral stays far tamer. The useful season runs from May to September, the Kornati at their best outside the height of August.

Skippered outings in September in Zadar

The autumn bora has not settled in yet, the Kornati empty out after the August rush, and the same 25–35% discount that applies across the Croatian fleet covers skippered outings too. The useful season ends in late September — book two to four weeks ahead via our last-minute boat rental guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does license-free boat rental cost in Zadar?

Observed range: €100–250 per day depending on season, size and platform. Boat-Comparator compares the real prices published at the time of your search.

Do I need a license?

Careful in Croatia: a recognised license is mandatory for any motorboat, whatever its power (and a VHF qualification is requested for liveaboard units). True bareboat "no-license" rental does not exist — the options are a skippered trip or a recognised foreign license (ICC among them). Check this point before comparing prices.

Which platforms do you compare in Zadar?

Boataround, SamBoat, Click&Boat and GlobeSailor are queried live; GetMyBoat and Boatsetter will join as partnership agreements land.

Can you rent a boat in Zadar without a license?

Not fully bareboat: Croatia requires a recognised license (the French coastal license, for instance) or a skipper on board for any motorboat, regardless of power. Most easy outings around Zadar are therefore booked with a professional skipper included.
