The license-free gozzo, king of the Amalfi coast

The Italian rule — no license up to 40 hp (30 kW), within 6 nautical miles of the coast — shaped the local market: the gozzo, the traditional decked boat, rents "senza patente" by the day from Amalfi's marina below the Duomo. The coast reads west to east like a ready-made itinerary: the Emerald Grotto at Conca dei Marini about two miles out, the Furore fjord just after, then Positano and the Li Galli islets four to five miles along. Capri, some fifteen miles away, is a full-day affair — with the fuel budget to match.

The morning slot, a local rule

Thermal breezes climb the cliffs in the afternoon and raise an unpleasant chop for a loaded gozzo: the regulars leave between 9 and 10 am, anchor for lunch and head back before the sea gets up. In September the coast breathes again: the sea at its warmest, the coast road finally moving, and rate cards well below August — the best time of year to rent here.

Amalfi's waters, in practice

The Amalfi coast, a UNESCO-listed wall of cliffs and clinging villages. Wind-wise: thermal breezes that climb the cliffs in the afternoon, with mornings offering the smoothest water.

Departures, day-trip classics and season

Departures: the Amalfi marina, below the Duomo and the lemon groves. The local classics: the Emerald Grotto at Conca dei Marini, the Furore fjord, Positano and the Li Galli islets. High season: from May to September, the coast best admired from the sea — the road, meanwhile, jams solid.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a boat rental cost in Amalfi?

Roughly €100–250 per day for a license-free boat, €200–600 for a RIB, more for motorboats, sailboats and catamarans. Boat-Comparator compares the real prices published by the platforms at the time of your search.

Do I need a license to rent a boat in Amalfi?

Italy is the most permissive country: no license up to 40 hp (30 kW), within 6 nautical miles of the coast. That is why the "senza patente" fleets of Sardinia, Sicily and the Amalfi coast are so large. Still mandatory: safety equipment on board and respect for swimming zones.

Which platforms list boats in Amalfi?

Boat-Comparator queries Boataround, SamBoat, Click&Boat and GlobeSailor live, showing price, photo, rating and booking link for every offer.

What time should you set off from Amalfi by boat?

Between 9 and 10 am: thermal breezes climb the cliffs in the afternoon and raise an unpleasant chop for a loaded gozzo. The regulars’ pattern — morning departure, lunch anchorage off Positano or Li Galli, back before the sea gets up.

Positano or Capri from Amalfi: which one in a day?

Positano, Li Galli and the Emerald Grotto fit in half a day (four to five miles of spectacular coast). Capri means some fifteen nautical miles each way: a full-day trip, only in fair weather and with the fuel budget accepted upfront.
