The Rented Boat Doesn't Match the Listing: What to Do
Missing equipment, a boat that looks nothing like the photos, a capacity that doesn't add up: how to react on the dock and assert your rights without ruining the day.
It's rare, but it happens: the boat waiting at the dock doesn't quite match what was advertised. Different photos, missing gear, a model swapped at the last minute — here's how to handle it without turning the day into a bad memory or an unnecessary argument with the operator on the dock.
Document before doing anything else
First move, before any discussion: photograph and film the discrepancy, dated if possible, before heading out. That evidence is what will back up any claim with the operator or the booking platform, far more effectively than an account given after the fact once everyone has moved on.
Telling a minor gap from a safety issue
A missing cushion or a colour that doesn't match the photos isn't the same as missing safety gear or an engine that isn't responding properly. In that second case, it's better not to set off and to insist the operator fix it on the spot, even if it means delaying departure by a few minutes — our guide to mandatory safety equipment lists what must be aboard.
Contact the operator, then the platform
The first point of contact stays the operator on site, who can sometimes fix the problem within the hour: a swapped boat, completed equipment, or a friendly adjustment. If that goes nowhere, the booking platform's customer service is the next line of recourse, backed by the evidence gathered, and usually reachable through the app or website used to book.
What you can reasonably expect
Depending on how serious the gap is: a goodwill gesture, a replacement boat where the fleet allows it, or a partial refund after the fact. A full cancellation for a minor discrepancy is rare — a documented, calmly filed claim, backed by photos, carries far more weight than an on-the-spot reaction at the dock.
Leaving a useful review
Once the rental is over, a factual review on the platform helps future renters form an accurate picture, good or bad, without overstating a minor hiccup or glossing over a genuine problem — in the same spirit as our comparisons of Click&Boat and SamBoat.
