Boat rental in the Cinque Terre from La Spezia
Hire a boat in La Spezia to discover the Cinque Terre and Porto Venere by sea: protected park, anchorages, budgets and the best sailing windows.
The Cinque Terre reveal themselves differently from the water. These five villages clinging to the cliff, linked by train and footpaths, come into their own seen from offshore, strung out along the coast. La Spezia, at the head of its great gulf, is the ideal base: a sheltered port with quick access to Porto Venere and the archipelago guarding the gulf's mouth, and a reasonable distance to the villages. That combination of shelter close at hand and open coast just beyond makes it a forgiving base, even if the weather turns and you have to change your plans.
La Spezia and the Gulf of Poets
From La Spezia you head out into the Gulf of Poets, named for Byron and Shelley who stayed here. To the west, Porto Venere closes the entrance with its church of St Peter set on the rock and the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto. It is an easy, sheltered first playground, perfect for finding your feet before running along the coast, with Byron's grotto to explore at the foot of the cliffs.
The Cinque Terre by sea
Heading north-west, you pass Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. The area is protected by a marine reserve and a national park: sailing, anchoring and swimming are regulated by zone, and some inlets are closed to anchoring. Anchorages are scarce and the coast drops away fast: most operators advise coming in calm weather and anchoring only in permitted zones. Check the park rules and any access fees before you set off.
Which boat, what budget
To cover the distance and stay comfortable along an exposed coast, a day-cruiser (250 to 900 €/day) is a good choice; a RIB (200 to 600 €/day) stays livelier near the villages. A skipper (150 to 350 €/day) is valuable here, between park zones and tricky anchorages. The same boat often varies by 10 to 25 % between platforms: Boat-Comparator shows SamBoat, Click&Boat, GlobeSailor and Boataround side by side, service fees of 0 to 9 % included.
Porto Venere and Palmaria
If swell rules out the Cinque Terre, the gulf offers a superb fallback. You anchor between Palmaria island and Porto Venere, visit the grotto, swim in calm clear water, then head up toward Lerici and its castle on the eastern shore. It is often the best plan B, and sometimes the finest, when the western face is too rough to sail comfortably.
The right window
Aim for a flat-calm morning: the Cinque Terre coast is open to the sea and quickly becomes uncomfortable in wind. From late May to September the water invites a swim. Avoid libeccio days, the south-westerly that raises a heavy swell on this shore. Check the permitted area and the cancellation policy, which varies by owner, before you confirm.
