Boat Rental in Corfu: Paxos and the Ionian Sea

Rent a boat in Corfu to reach Paxos, Antipaxos and the Ionian Sea: gentle winds, coves, indicative prices and tips to start sailing with confidence.

The Ionian Sea has a well-earned reputation: gentler winds than the Aegean, green islands and short distances. Corfu is its ideal gateway, with an international airport and several charter bases. Renting a boat here means a calm week, perfect for a first sailing experience or for a family that wants to sail without stress.

Corfu, a gentle Ionian base

Unlike the Cyclades swept by the meltem, the Ionian offers moderate thermal breezes in summer, often in the early afternoon, and calm nights. That makes it reassuring terrain for beginners. From Corfu you can work your way gradually south, stringing together short, sheltered legs without ever straying far from a harbour. The island's north-east coast, dotted with small bays, makes a fine warm-up before heading for Paxos.

Paxos and Antipaxos, southern gems

Paxos, small and wooded, charms with harbours such as Gaios and Lakka and the sea caves of its west coast. Just below, Antipaxos concentrates unreal, clear water on the beaches of Voutoumi and Vrika. These anchorages fill up during the day, so arrive early in the morning or stay for the evening, once the day trips head back to Corfu. The tavernas of Lakka make a memorable overnight stop, sheltered from the prevailing wind.

Which boat and for whom

A sailboat (1,500 to 4,000 € per week) is plenty for this accessible area; a catamaran adds comfort and stability for families. For a first charter without local knowledge, a skipper (150 to 350 € a day) reassures and helps you improve. Boat-Comparator compares offers live, which helps spot the 10 to 25 % gaps that are common for the same boat, and choose without overpaying. A monohull is the natural choice here, though a catamaran suits families who value deck space and shallow-draft anchoring.

When to sail the Ionian

The season runs from May to October. June and September combine warm sea, long days and reasonable crowds, while July and August see the popular anchorages fill early. The breezes generally stay manageable, but still watch the forecast for the more exposed Corfu-Paxos crossing. Plan your longest legs for the morning and leave time for swimming, the heart of a successful Ionian trip. Also think about booking a berth on busy evenings, particularly at Gaios and Lakka, where the quays fill early in high season. And keep some cash on board, as a few of the smaller tavernas and harbour offices still prefer it to cards, especially outside the main season.
