Saint-Cyprien, Canet-en-Roussillon, Port-Vendres: Which Base on the Vermeille Coast?

Three very different marinas south of Perpignan, from sandy beaches to the rocky coves of the Côte Vermeille down to the Spanish border: how to pick your starting port.

South of Perpignan, the Roussillon coastline changes character within a few kilometres: long sandy beaches as far as Argelès, then the rocky, indented Côte Vermeille running down to the Spanish border. Three very different marinas give access to this stretch of coast by boat, each with its own character and its own type of water.

Canet-en-Roussillon and Saint-Cyprien, the big sand-coast marinas

Canet-en-Roussillon and Saint-Cyprien rank among the largest marinas on the Roussillon coast, backed by long sandy beaches and an open, easy stretch of water — practical bases for a first license-free outing. The two harbours sit just a few kilometres apart, leaving a backup option if one is fully booked in peak season.

Port-Vendres, the historic natural harbour

Further south, Port-Vendres occupies a deep natural harbour used since antiquity — its name is said to come from the Latin Portus Veneris, the port of Venus. Fortified during the Vauban era, it was long an active fishing and trading port known for its anchovies, and today it's also a base for pleasure boating, quieter than the two sandy-coast marinas to the north.

From Collioure to the Spanish border

From Port-Vendres, Collioure and its coves, covered in our guide to Collioure and the Vermeille Coast, are just minutes away, before the rocky coastline runs on to Cerbère, at the Spanish border. Between Canet and Collioure, the resort town of Argelès-sur-Mer marks the transition from long sandy beaches to the first rocky coves further south.

The wind, worth watching closely

This stretch stays exposed to the tramontane, a north-westerly wind that can pick up quickly and without much warning along this part of the coast — worth checking before heading out, especially on small license-free boats, and worth cross-checking with our guide to Mediterranean winds.

Budget and best time to go

Rates stay close to the rest of the Languedoc coast for a RIB or motorboat rented by the day. The season runs from April to October, peaking in July-August, when all three marinas tend to fill up by midweek. Boat-Comparator compares live offers across all three marinas of the Vermeille Coast.
