Douarnenez and Cap Sizun by Boat, to the Edge of the Raz de Sein

A former sardine port ranked among Europe's finest, Douarnenez opens onto a wide sheltered bay and the notorious Raz de Sein.

Douarnenez was one of France's largest sardine ports at the turn of the 20th century; its Port-Musée, floating in the harbour at Rosmeur, now holds one of Brittany's finest collections of traditional boats, worth a visit before or after a day on the water. Île Tristan, right at the harbour entrance, has its own turbulent history: it served as a fortified stronghold for Captain de Fontenelle in the late 16th century, during the Wars of the League.

A wide, sheltered bay to start with

The Bay of Douarnenez is one of Brittany's largest, well protected from westerly swell — an ideal stretch of water for a first outing, with Île Tristan reachable on foot at low tide just outside the harbour.

Towards Cap Sizun and the Pointe du Raz

Heading west, the Cap Sizun coastline narrows and grows more exposed, all the way to the Pointe du Raz and the famous Raz de Sein, one of Brittany's best-known passages for the strength of its tidal currents. This isn't a trip to improvise: only experienced crews, at slack tide and in calm weather, venture through — for everyone else, admiring the point from the bay without crossing the Raz remains the sensible choice. The passage is marked by several landmark lighthouses, including the Phare de la Vieille, one of the most photographed in Brittany during winter storms.

Towards Crozon, across the bay

Opposite, the Crozon peninsula closes off the Bay of Douarnenez and extends the trip toward cliffs and coves just as spectacular, for those who'd rather stay on the sheltered side.

Tides and budget

As everywhere in Brittany, tides set the pace for departure times and anchoring — our Atlantic tides guide remains the reference to check before booking. Budget €200-600/day for a RIB able to cover the bay without venturing into the Raz.
