La Grande-Motte and the Étang de l'Or by Boat, Futurist Marina Meets Lagoon
Concrete pyramids, fine sand and a Mediterranean lagoon: La Grande-Motte makes for an unusual departure point for sailing in Occitania.
Instantly recognisable for its pyramid-shaped buildings, La Grande-Motte is a seaside resort entirely designed in the 1960s and 1970s by architect Jean Balladur — a one-of-a-kind piece of town planning on the French coast, worth a look before you even set out to sea.
A marina at the heart of a planned resort
The marina at La Grande-Motte was designed from the start as the resort's centrepiece: the pyramid buildings frame it directly, giving very quick access to your boat from the town centre, without the drive sometimes needed elsewhere on this coast. The architect deliberately avoided the standard tower blocks of the Languedoc coast so that every flat would have a sea view — a design choice that remains unique on this stretch of coastline.
The Étang de l'Or, right behind the beach
Behind the resort spreads the Étang de l'Or (also known as the Étang de Mauguio), a shallow lagoon cut off from the sea by the dune barrier — a stretch of water reserved for small craft, and quite different in mood from coastal sailing, closer to what you'll find at the Thau lagoon a little further west. This stretch of water is a designated Natura 2000 site for its birdlife: herons, egrets and occasionally flamingos take shelter here, biodiversity best watched from a distance, staying clear of the most sensitive zones.
Towards the Camargue and Le Grau-du-Roi
Heading east along the coast, roughly an hour's sailing brings you to the wild beaches of the Camargue and the port of Le Grau-du-Roi, with flamingos visible from the water and vast sandy beaches that contrast with La Grande-Motte's tightly planned layout.
Budget and good to know
As elsewhere on the Occitania coast, budget €100-250/day for a license-free boat and €200-600/day for a RIB. The coast is fairly exposed to southeasterly winds: check the day's forecast before heading offshore, as swell can build quickly on this straight, unsheltered shoreline.
