Boat Rental in Mandelieu: la Napoule and the Estérel
Boat rental in Mandelieu: departures from la Napoule and la Rague, the red calanques of the Estérel, which boat to choose, when to go and what it costs.
Mandelieu-la-Napoule enjoys a rare position on the French Riviera: two departure harbours, Port la Napoule below the medieval castle and Port de la Rague on the Théoule side, with the red calanques of the Estérel waiting just beyond the headland. There is no long harbour transit here — ten minutes after casting off, you are already cruising along one of the most spectacular stretches of the French Mediterranean.
The cruising ground: the Gulf of la Napoule and the Estérel corniche
The Gulf of la Napoule is a sheltered bay, ideal for finding your feet. Heading west, the coast changes character at Théoule-sur-Mer: red porphyry rock, deep coves and turquoise water follow one another all the way to the bay of Agay. The spots not to miss:
- Pointe de l'Aiguille at Théoule: the first red rocks, with anchoring possible in fair weather;
- The Estérel calanques around Figueirette and Maubois: narrow inlets and superb snorkelling;
- Cap du Dramont and the île d'Or, for a more ambitious day out;
- The Lérins islands, heading east, for a lunch anchorage facing Cannes.
Which boat to choose for your plans
To stay within the gulf and potter along to Théoule, a licence-free boat is enough: in France that means an engine capped at 6 hp, daytime navigation and a zone defined by the rental company. To string together the calanques as far as Agay or cross to the Lérins, choose a RIB — seaworthy, quick and easy to anchor close to the rocks — while a motorboat with a sundeck is more comfortable for families. When to go
The season runs from April to October. June and September offer the best balance: warm water, quiet anchorages and gentler rates than midsummer. In July and August, book early and leave in the morning: the water is glassy early in the day and choppier in the afternoon once the thermal breeze fills in. When an easterly is established, the Estérel corniche becomes uncomfortable — fall back on the gulf or head towards Cannes and the Lérins, which are better protected.
Budget: the ranges we see
Expect 100–250 € per day for a licence-free boat, 200–600 € per day for a RIB and 250–900 € per day for a motorboat, excluding fuel and deposit. A skipper costs 150–350 € per day if you would rather hand over the helm. The same boat can vary by 10–25 % depending on the booking platform, with service fees ranging from 0 to 9 %: Boat-Comparator compares offers from the main platforms live in Mandelieu and across the French Riviera, without being affiliated to any of them. Cancellation policies vary from one rental company to another — check each listing before booking.
