Boat Rental in Martigues: The Côte Bleue's Quiet Coves Near Marseille
Nicknamed the 'Provençal Venice' for its canals, Martigues opens onto the Côte Bleue, a string of protected coves between Marseille and Fos less known than the calanques to the south.
West of Marseille, Martigues and the Côte Bleue stay clear of the summer crowds — a quieter alternative to the calanques to the south, less than an hour's drive from the city.
Martigues, the "Provençal Venice"
Threaded with canals linking the Étang de Berre to the sea, Martigues earned its nickname from these colourful, canal-lined basins that drew painters throughout the 20th century. The marina opens directly onto the Gulf of Fos on one side and the Côte Bleue on the other.
The Côte Bleue: coves and a marine park
Between Martigues and Marseille, the Côte Bleue strings together a series of rocky coves far quieter than Cassis, partly protected by the Côte Bleue marine park, one of the earliest marine protected areas set up on the French Mediterranean coast. Some zones within the park are fully protected, with anchoring and navigation restricted — worth checking before you stop.
Quieter than it looks on the map
Without the easy road access of Cassis or La Ciotat, the Côte Bleue stays noticeably less crowded at the height of summer — a real advantage for anyone after a peaceful anchorage still close to Marseille.
When to sail
The mistral, gathering speed as it funnels down the Rhône valley, hits this stretch directly: check the marine forecast before heading out, especially outside summer. Summer remains the most stable period.
Budget and comparison
RIB €200-600 a day, motorboat €250-900. Martigues complements our Marseille and Frioul calanques guide; our marine protected areas guide covers the rules to know before anchoring.
