Renting a Boat in Milos: Sarakiniko and the Wild Cyclades

The lunar landscape of Sarakiniko, an unspoiled volcanic island: what to know about renting a boat in Milos, in the Cyclades.

Quieter than Mykonos or Santorini, Milos draws visitors for scenery few Greek islands can match: white rock formations shaped by volcanic activity, worth discovering from the water as much as from land.

Sarakiniko, the lunar landscape

Sarakiniko is a bay of white volcanic rock, polished by erosion into rounded shapes reminiscent of a lunar landscape, with turquoise water standing out against the pale stone — a photogenic anchorage, best visited early or late in the day to avoid the busiest hours.

An island shaped by volcanism

Milos owes its rugged relief to its volcanic past: obsidian quarries worked since antiquity, some of Greece's most important early-Christian catacombs, and a string of colourful coves all around the island, from the white of Sarakiniko to the ochre of Firiplaka.

When to sail

As across the rest of the Cyclades, the meltemi blows in summer and can chop up the sea by midday: favour morning or evening outings when it is blowing hard. Our Mediterranean winds guide covers this seasonal wind and how to work around it.
