Boat Rental in the Peloponnese, from Kalamata
The Gulf of Messinia, the Mani peninsula, Venetian fortresses: renting a boat from Kalamata to explore a still-uncrowded corner of the Peloponnese.
Quieter than the Cyclades or the Ionian Islands, the Peloponnese offers genuinely off-the-beaten-path sailing, between fishing villages, Venetian fortresses and empty coves in the Gulf of Messinia.
Kalamata, gateway to the Gulf of Messinia
From Kalamata, famous for its olives, the Gulf of Messinia opens wide to the south, sheltered by the Mani peninsula to the east and the Messinian coast to the west — largely calm water in summer, well suited to a relaxed cruise.
Methoni and Koroni, the Venetian fortresses
At the south end of the gulf, the fortresses of Methoni and Koroni, built by Venice to guard the route to the East, overlook clear-water bays where anchoring is easy. They're two of the most photogenic stops of a cruise in the region.
The Mani peninsula
East of the gulf, the Mani peninsula unfolds a stark, rocky landscape dotted with traditional stone tower houses and small fishing harbours where you'll meet few other pleasure boats, even in August. The tip of Cape Tainaron, mainland Greece's southernmost point, marks a symbolic turning point for the more adventurous crews.
Sailing for every level
The sheltered Gulf of Messinia suits a less experienced crew; heading out toward Cape Tainaron and the more swell-exposed east coast of the Mani is better left to confident sailors or a skippered outing.
Budget and comparison
A sailboat rents for €300-700/day (€1,500-4,000/week), a catamaran €800-1,500/day. A local skipper (€150-350/day) knows the gulf's sheltered anchorages and the best waterfront tavernas. Boat-Comparator compares Boataround, SamBoat, Click&Boat and GlobeSailor for Kalamata in one search.
