Renting a Boat in Portisco and Cannigione, the Quiet Bases of the Costa Smeralda

On the Gulf of Arzachena in northern Sardinia, two marinas quieter than Porto Cervo give easy access to the La Maddalena archipelago.

In northern Sardinia, the Gulf of Arzachena shelters two bases quieter than Porto Cervo, yet just as well placed for exploring the Costa Smeralda and the La Maddalena archipelago: Portisco and Cannigione, both easy to reach from Olbia airport.

The Gulf of Arzachena, away from Porto Cervo

The Gulf of Arzachena forms a sheltered basin, set back from the Costa Smeralda's most glamorous stretch — calmer water, with marinas where renting stays more affordable than in Porto Cervo itself. The pink granite outcrops that line the gulf, typical of northern Sardinia, stay in view for most of the run out to open water.

Portisco, a modern, sheltered marina

The marina at Portisco, built at the head of the gulf, offers well-protected moorings and a rental fleet geared towards RIBs and sailboats, whether for a day out or a week-long charter. Its sheltered position makes it a practical base for an easy first outing before heading further out, including for a first license-free rental in the area.

Cannigione, a village and gateway to La Maddalena

A little further north on the same gulf, Cannigione keeps a fishing-village feel, with a smaller harbour and a direct run out towards the archipelago. Its seafront restaurants make for a pleasant stop before or after a day on the water, and the village stays noticeably quieter than the marinas closer to Porto Cervo.

The La Maddalena archipelago, the must-do excursion

From either base, the La Maddalena archipelago, a national park, is the goal of most day trips: granite islands, turquoise water and sheltered anchorages between Sardinia and Corsica. The island of Caprera, once home to Giuseppe Garibaldi, is part of the archipelago and is an easy add-on to a full day of sailing among the islands.

Budget and comparison with Olbia

Rates stay close to those charged in Olbia, covered in our guide to Olbia and the Costa Smeralda, often a touch gentler than Porto Cervo for a comparable boat. The season runs from May to September, peaking in July-August, when both marinas fill up well ahead of the weekend. Boat-Comparator compares live offers available in Portisco and Cannigione.
