Boat Rental in Puglia, at Bari and Brindisi

Bari's old town, Brindisi's Roman columns, the southern Adriatic: the guide to renting a boat in Italy's Puglia region.

The heel of the Italian boot, Puglia remains an under-the-radar boating destination for French renters, far from the crowds of Sardinia or the Amalfi Coast — and that's exactly its charm.

Bari, the old town facing the sea

Bari is the region's capital: its historic quarter, Bari Vecchia, a maze of white lanes packed around the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, can be admired both from the water and on foot. The port also runs ferry links to the Balkans and Greece.

Brindisi, the end of the Appian Way

Further south, Brindisi has marked the terminus of the ancient Appian Way linking Rome to the Adriatic since Roman times — two Roman columns, still standing on the harbourfront, once marked the road's end. The town has kept a sheltered old harbour, ideal for a quiet stopover.

South of Brindisi, the Salento

Beyond Brindisi begins the Salento, the very tip of the Italian heel, nicknamed "Italy's Maldives" for the turquoise colour of its water — a fine day-trip option for anyone setting out from Brindisi.

Calmer sailing than further north

Unlike the northern Adriatic, where the bora can pick up violently, Puglia mostly deals with the sirocco, a warmer southerly wind that builds more gradually in summer — easier to plan around than to be caught out by.
