Saint-Florent boat rental: the Agriates desert beaches
Rent a boat in Saint-Florent to reach the Agriates desert: Loto and Saleccia beaches from the sea, anchorages and clear-headed navigation advice.
From Saint-Florent, the sea is by far the finest route into the Agriates desert. The Loto and Saleccia beaches, hard to reach overland, open up within a few miles of the gulf. Renting a boat here means swapping the dusty track for translucent water and near-empty coves outside peak season.
Loto and Saleccia from the water
Loto beach is easily reached by following the western shore of the gulf: white sand, clear bottom, a comfortable anchor hold in light weather. From there, Saleccia is within range, wider and wilder. Between the two, a string of small coves invites a swim. Navigation stays simple, but keep clear of marked swimming zones and watch for seagrass so you drop the anchor on sand.
The Agriates desert has no harbour and no resupply: set off with water, shade and a full picnic. Anchoring is calmest in the morning, before the shuttles and day boats arrive. If you want quiet, aim for a secondary cove rather than Loto at midday, and always keep depth under the hull: the bottom rises quickly near the shore.
Choosing your boat in Saint-Florent
For this coast, a RIB (200–600 €/day) offers the best speed-comfort balance; a motor cruiser (250–900 €/day) suits families wanting shade and a cabin. A boat rental in Saint-Florent should be booked early in July and August, when demand peaks. A useful reminder: for the same boat, rates often vary by 10 to 25 % between platforms.
Wind is factor number one
The gulf of Saint-Florent is known for the libeccio, a west-south-westerly that can build fast and make the return uncomfortable. Check the marine forecast the evening before and again in the morning, plan the run to the Agriates early, and keep a margin to get back before the sea gets up. In an established wind, postponing beats pushing on.
Because the Agriates coast faces west, it takes the swell as soon as the wind picks up: an anchorage that is pleasant in the morning can turn rolly by afternoon. Scout a better-sheltered cove to fall back on, and do not hesitate to cut the day short. A skipper (150–350 €/day) can be a good option for a first look at this water if you are not yet comfortable reading the local wind.
Compare before you book
Saint-Florent is also a fine base for exploring more of the Corsican coast; our guide to Corsica by boat sets the Balagne within a wider itinerary. On price, Boat-Comparator compares Boataround, SamBoat, Click&Boat and GlobeSailor live, unaffiliated with any: you see the real total, service fees included (0 to 9 %), and the cancellation policy, which varies by owner. Book well ahead for July and August, when the best boats go fast and choice narrows quickly.
