BOAT-COMPARATOR Guide
Boat Rental in Tuscany, at Punta Ala and San Vincenzo
Gateway to the Tuscan Archipelago and the island of Elba: renting a boat from Punta Ala or San Vincenzo, on the Tuscan coast.
Less familiar to French sailors than Liguria or the Amalfi Coast, the Tuscan coast opens directly onto the Tuscan Archipelago, of which the island of Elba is the best known.
Punta Ala, a marina built for the sea
Punta Ala is a seaside resort built around its marina in the 1960s, on the edge of the Maremma and its pine forests. It's one of the handiest starting points for reaching Elba and the archipelago within a short day's sail.
San Vincenzo, further south
San Vincenzo, near Piombino, offers just as direct an approach to Elba, with long sandy beaches lined with umbrella pines and generally calmer water than the neighbouring Ligurian coast.
Europe's largest marine park
The Tuscan Archipelago (Elba, Giglio, Giannutri and the other islands) forms the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, the largest marine protected area in the Mediterranean. Sailing there is unrestricted, but anchoring is regulated in certain sensitive areas — see our marine protected areas guide for the right habits.
When to sail
Wind here is generally moderate, with the classic summer afternoon thermal (the sea picking up around 2-3 pm) — favour morning crossings to Elba, as everywhere in the Mediterranean.
