Renting a Boat in Vannes: Sailing the Gulf of Morbihan From the Prefecture
Vannes, gateway to the Gulf of Morbihan: oyster market, ramparts, Conleau island, and the tidal currents to know before casting off.
With its medieval ramparts almost dipping into the harbour and its Gulf oyster market, Vannes is not just the prefecture of the Morbihan: it is also one of the handiest access points to the "petite mer", the inland sea dotted with dozens of islands that Bretons call the Gulf of Morbihan. Renting a boat from Vannes means setting off straight from the town centre, a short walk from the Vincin marina and the Conleau peninsula.
An inland sea, but no gentle backwater
Do not be fooled by the Gulf's sheltered look: it is one of the areas with the strongest tidal currents on the whole Atlantic coast. At the entrance, between Port-Navalo and Locmariaquer, they already reach 3.5 to 4 knots; in the narrows between the islands of Berder and La Jument, they can exceed 9 knots at big coefficients — faster than the cruising speed of most rental sailboats. A 2020 doctoral thesis at the University of Western Brittany, on the sediment dynamics of the Creïzic sandbank at the heart of the Gulf, documents precisely this hydrodynamic intensity linked to the narrowness of the passes (see the thesis on Google Scholar). In practice: you do not sail the Gulf at just any hour — check the tide tables and plan your passages around slack water.
What you can see in a day
- Île-aux-Moines and Île d'Arz, a short hour's motoring away, for a lunch anchorage;
- The Gavrinis cairn, a Neolithic tumulus visible from the water on its own island;
- Locmariaquer and its megaliths, at the ocean-side entrance to the Gulf;
- Port du Crouesty, the region's largest marina, for a technical stopover.
Which boat, which plan
A RIB or a day-cruiser is more than enough for a day trip in the Gulf: the water is sheltered from the wind, but not from the currents, which makes manoeuvrability more important than raw speed. For a full week, many renters combine the Gulf with the nearby Quiberon bay via the Teignouse passage — an itinerary detailed in our comparison Quiberon or La Trinité-sur-Mer. Our overview of the Gulf of Morbihan covers the whole area if you are still unsure where to start.
