Villefranche-sur-Mer: the Deepest Natural Bay on the French Riviera

Renting a boat at Villefranche-sur-Mer: the deepest natural bay on the French Riviera, Cap Ferrat by sea, and why the water stays so clear close to shore.

Between Nice and Cap Ferrat, the bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer holds a feature few holidaymakers know about: it's one of the deepest natural bays in the entire Mediterranean, with depths reaching nearly 95 metres just a few hundred metres from shore.

A bay deep enough for aircraft carriers

That exceptional depth, the result of an old submarine canyon plunging almost to the foot of the seafront buildings, is why the bay has long anchored aircraft carriers and large warships, and cruise liners today. For a rented boat, it mainly means an anchorage sheltered in any weather, with remarkably clear water right outside the harbour.

A research station running since 1957

That same depth has long drawn oceanographers: a fixed monitoring point off Villefranche, tracked without interruption since 1957 by researchers at the marine observatory, makes it one of the longest-running series of ocean observations in the world. Work carried out at this site has tracked, over a full decade, fluctuations in the bay's zooplankton communities — a marker of the marine life the local depth helps bring close to the surface (Vandromme, Stemmann, Berline & Gorsky et al., Biogeosciences, 2011, see the study on Google Scholar).

On to Cap Ferrat by sea

From the bay, Cap Ferrat is a short, easy hour's cruise away, with views of its villas and the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild that the road never offers. The Saint-Hospice point and its small chapel make a good anchorage for a swim stop before continuing to Beaulieu-sur-Mer or heading back to Nice. Our guide to Nice and Villefranche by boat covers the full route between the two bays.

Clear water made for exploring below the surface

The clarity of the water and the short distance to the drop-offs make the bay a worthwhile spot for guided diving or snorkelling, easily paired with a day on the water — our guide to scuba diving from a rented boat covers the practical side of arranging it.

Budget and planning

Expect €200–600 a day for a RIB and €250–900 a day for a motorboat, with a modest premium in peak season on this much sought-after stretch of the French Riviera. Boat-Comparator compares live offers available on Villefranche-sur-Mer, with no affiliation to any platform.
