Catamaran Rental in Mykonos: Rhenia, Delos and Meltemi
Catamaran rental in Mykonos: day trips to Rhenia and Delos, how to plan around the meltemi wind, a realistic budget and advice for comparing offers early.
In Mykonos, a boat changes everything: while the island buzzes through its crowded lanes, a catamaran takes you in under an hour to the turquoise coves of Rhenia and the ancient site of Delos. It is the most spectacular day trip in the Cyclades — provided you plan around the meltemi. Here is how to organise it.
Rhenia and Delos: the essential pairing
Uninhabited Rhenia lines up pale-sand coves with crystalline water: this is where the swimming and the lunch at anchor happen, usually on the west coast, sheltered from the prevailing wind. Directly opposite, Delos and its listed archaeological site make a fascinating stop — access is regulated and visiting hours are limited, and your skipper knows the procedure. The round trip from Mykonos fits comfortably into a day, swims included.
Book the Delos visit as soon as your date is fixed: slots go quickly in summer and landing there cannot be improvised. Most operators handle the tickets for you if you ask at booking time. And if the site happens to be closed on the day, Rhenia alone easily fills the hours with empty coves and beaches.
Planning around the meltemi
From June to September the meltemi blows from the north, sometimes hard for several days in a row. It is the real constraint of this cruising ground: departures tend to be in the morning, when the wind is more manageable, and anchorages are picked in the lee of the islands. A catamaran is a precious ally here — steady in a choppy anchorage and reassuring for less seasoned guests. If a full week tempts you, our one-week Cyclades itinerary shows how to string the islands together downwind. On strong meltemi days, accept plan B without regret: Mykonos' south coast also lines up fine beaches reachable at anchor, and the sea state there stays far more forgiving.
Budget: what to allow
Expect €800 to €1,500 a day for a catamaran, or €3,000 to €8,000 a week depending on size and season. In Mykonos a skipper is strongly advised even for experienced sailors — windy anchorages, Delos regulations — and costs €150 to €350 a day when not included. Fuel is often billed on actual consumption and extras are à la carte: ask for the detail before confirming.
Booking at the right price
The fleet in Mykonos is smaller than in the big charter bases, and the best boats go early. The same catamaran can show a 10 to 25% price gap between platforms, before service fees of 0 to 9%. Boat-Comparator compares Boataround, SamBoat, Click&Boat and GlobeSailor live on catamarans for rent in Mykonos, with no affiliation to any platform.
