Copa del Rey MAPFRE in Palma (1-8 August 2026): watching the regatta from a rental boat
From 1 to 8 August 2026, the Bay of Palma de Mallorca hosts the 44th Copa del Rey MAPFRE, one of the Mediterranean's biggest cruising regattas: how to watch it from a rental boat.
From 1 to 8 August 2026, the Bay of Palma de Mallorca fills with sails for the 44th Copa del Rey MAPFRE, organised by the Real Club Náutico de Palma: one of the biggest cruising sailing regattas in the whole Mediterranean, with dozens of boats racing across several classes.
A week of racing right in the bay
Unlike an offshore race, the Copa del Rey is sailed on courses close to shore, inside the Bay of Palma itself: competitors generally head out from the harbour each morning, for races that can be watched from land as easily as from the water, all week long.
What the crews are actually going through
Behind the spectacle, the physical load on racing sailors is real: a study of Laser class sailors during regattas measured heart rates regularly topping 150 beats per minute while sailing upwind, the most demanding phase of a race (Winchcombe, C., Goods, P., Binnie, M., Doyle, M., Fahey-Gilmour, J. & Peeling, P., Workload demands of laser class sailing regattas, International Journal of Performance Analysis in Sport, 2021, see the study on Google Scholar) — a real effort, even aboard cruising boats far larger than a Laser dinghy.
Watching without getting in the way
Following the regatta from a rental boat is entirely possible, provided you stay clear of the marked race area and keep your distance from the competitors, who always have right of way. Our guide on sailing regattas and how not to get in the way covers the etiquette to follow so you don't disrupt a race.
Where to rent a boat in Palma for the occasion
Our guide on renting a boat in Mallorca covers the bases around Palma, and Boat-Comparator queries Boataround, SamBoat and Click&Boat live to show the boats actually available in Palma over the regatta week — worth booking early, as the event draws strong local demand.
After the regatta
Once the racing fleet is put away for the day, the Bay of Palma turns back into an ordinary stretch of water for a coastal outing or a quiet spot to anchor, far from the harbour's buzz during race week.
