Crossing Borders by Boat: Customs and Schengen Rules to Know
Sailing from one country to another between France, Italy and Spain, or leaving the Schengen area: what to know before renting a boat abroad.
Unlike a road trip, there's no border post in the middle of the sea — but the rules that apply to a boater really do change from one country to the next, between free movement inside Schengen, mandatory insurance and customs formalities.
Within Schengen: smooth sailing between borders
France, Italy and Spain all belong to the Schengen area: moving from one port to another — from Menton to Ventimiglia, for instance, as covered in our guide to the French-Italian border by boat — in principle requires no systematic border check. Still, keep valid ID on board: a spot check remains possible at any time, at sea or in port.
Outside Schengen: plan a customs stop
Head to Turkey, Tunisia or another country outside this area, and things change: you must report to the first port with a customs office to register the boat and passengers' entry, then repeat the process on the way out. On a crewed charter, the local operator usually handles most of this paperwork — one more reason to favour a skippered charter abroad, and a good habit paired with our guide on avoiding rental scams.
Insurance, the formality that actually matters
Almost every neighbouring country requires third-party liability insurance covering the rented boat, including for foreign visitors. In practice, the platform or rental company supplies it with the boat: just confirm, before leaving, that a certificate is on board, written in English or the destination country's language — a habit that pairs well with our guide to deposits and insurance.
In practice
Keep a paper copy on board of your booking, each passenger's ID and the insurance certificate: that's what you'll be asked for during a check, whether you're still inside Schengen or already outside it. If in doubt about a specific destination, French customs answer boaters' questions by phone on a dedicated line — worth saving before a long trip abroad. Worth knowing: Croatia, long outside Schengen, joined the area in January 2023 — a hugely popular charter destination that has since shifted to the "smooth sailing" side of the equation.
