Renting a Jet Ski: License, Age and Rules to Know
Do you need a license to rent a jet ski? Minimum age, sailing zones, speed near the shore: the rules to know before booking.
The jet ski (personal watercraft) is popular for a short, thrill-packed outing, but it follows different rules from an ordinary boat. Here is what to know before booking.
Do you need a license?
As with a boat, the threshold is engine power: above 6 horsepower, a pleasure-craft license (coastal license, or an inland-waters license depending on the water) is required to drive. Below that threshold, or under the direct supervision of a qualified instructor, no license is required — the format most rental bases offer for a first, guided outing.
The minimum age
You must be at least 16 to drive a jet ski in France. A child can still ride along as a passenger from age 12, alongside an adult holder of the license or an instructor.
Where and how fast to ride
The 300-metre, 5-knot rule applies as it does to any powered craft: reduced speed close to the shore and to swimmers, free navigation further out. Some areas (supervised beaches, nature reserves, access channels) are off-limits to powered craft — the operator hands over a map of the permitted zones.
No license? Try a guided outing
To try it without formalities, guided group rides with an instructor remain the most accessible option: safety briefing, marked route, and no prior experience required. It is also the best fit for a first family outing.
Before you book
Check the deposit required, whether insurance is included, and the minimum age set by the operator, which can be stricter than the legal minimum. Our 5-knot rule guide and our French coastal license page fill in the detail; if you would rather sail with no license at all, our license-free boat rental guide covers the boat alternatives.
