First-Aid Kit and Vaccines Before a Boat Charter in the Tropics
Caribbean, Seychelles, French Polynesia: what's worth preparing on the health side before boarding, without replacing advice from a doctor or a travel health clinic.
A boat charter in the Caribbean, the Seychelles or French Polynesia isn't quite prepared the same way as a trip in the Mediterranean. The health side deserves a few weeks' notice, not a last-minute thought at the airport.
See a doctor before you go
A travel health clinic or your own doctor is the only reliable source for which recommendations apply to your destination and season: they vary by country, by exact itinerary, and by each traveller's health. A US study on international travellers' knowledge and practices found that a significant share leave without a pre-travel consultation, while those who do see a doctor beforehand adopt noticeably better prevention habits (Hamer & Connor, Travel Health Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices among United States Travelers, Journal of Travel Medicine, 2004, see the study on Google Scholar).
The basic kit, useful everywhere
High-factor sun protection, antihistamines, seasickness tablets, antiseptic and plasters, a thermometer, and enough of everyone's usual personal medication for the whole trip plus a safety margin: this base kit is the same as for the Mediterranean — just don't leave it in a bag back at the marina.
What changes in the tropics
Depending on the destination, a travel health clinic may recommend extra mosquito protection (repellent, covering clothing at anchor around dusk) on top of the usual kit. This is worth checking destination by destination rather than assuming it's the same across every tropical area.
Seasickness and heat exhaustion, the two most common issues
In practice, it's rarely tropical disease that spoils a week's charter, but seasickness and heat exhaustion — at these latitudes, the sun is already strong by 9am. Preventing both in advance avoids most on-board health issues.
Once on board
The local rental operator knows the nearby options (pharmacy, clinic, doctor): ask for that information as soon as you arrive rather than in an emergency, and keep a digital copy of your prescriptions on your phone.
