Orcas in the Strait of Gibraltar: What to Know Before Renting a Boat

Since 2020, orcas have been biting the rudders of sailboats in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Gulf of Cadiz. The risk zone, what to do if approached, and what it means for a rental out of Algeciras, Tarifa or Sotogrande.

Since the summer of 2020, an unprecedented behaviour has been worrying sailors between Spain and Morocco: orcas approaching sailboats and catamarans to bite at their rudders, sometimes disabling them entirely. The phenomenon stays concentrated in one specific area — the Strait of Gibraltar and the Gulf of Cadiz — but it keeps growing year on year, with maritime rescue centres in Tarifa and Cadiz reporting a further rise in interactions in 2026. Worth extra caution for any boat rental out of Algeciras, Tarifa, Sotogrande, or the stretch of Andalusian coast closest to the strait.

A localised but growing behaviour

Interactions cluster in a fairly narrow corridor between the Gulf of Cadiz and the strait itself, peaking between April and October — which happens to be the high season for boat rental on this coast. Almost all cases involve sailboats and catamarans, whose rudders seem to draw the orcas' attention; motorboats and RIBs are affected far less often. Dozens of boats have suffered significant damage since 2020, and a small number have sunk after rudder failure, with no human injuries reported to date.

What the research shows

A team of Spanish and Portuguese researchers documented the behaviour from its very first appearance: for 2020 alone, they logged 49 confirmed orca-vessel interactions in the Strait of Gibraltar, involving only part of the local subpopulation — barely thirty individuals, classified as critically endangered. The authors weigh several hypotheses still under debate, ranging from a possible initial traumatic incident that altered one female's behaviour to a form of social play that spread through the group by learning, without settling on a single explanation (Esteban, López Fernandez et al., Killer whales of the Strait of Gibraltar, an endangered subpopulation showing a disruptive behavior, Marine Mammal Science, 2022, see the study on Google Scholar). Monitoring of this population has continued since, notably through the GTOA network (Grupo de Trabajo Orca Atlántica).

What to do if orcas approach

Spanish maritime authorities and monitoring associations share a common set of guidelines, worth knowing before sailing in the area:

Our guide to VHF and safety at sea covers the right communication habits when assistance is needed, orcas or not.

What it means for a rental near the strait

Most rental operators in the region already advise unaccompanied crews against crossing the strait in peak season, as our guide to Sotogrande and the Strait of Gibraltar points out: a coastal outing in the Bay of Algeciras, rather than a crossing into open water, already cuts exposure sharply. On the insurance side, rudder damage caused by an orca is generally treated as an ordinary accidental claim, but some contracts specifically exclude rudder and steering-gear damage from the deposit-excess waiver — worth checking before signing, as detailed in our guide to deposit and insurance. If in doubt about the day's route, the rental operator remains the best source: they generally track the zones flagged by the authorities closely and adjust their recommendations accordingly.

In practice, before booking

On this stretch of coast, a skippered outing or a RIB is the safer choice for a first-time visit, checking local sailing reports before departure, and avoiding the strait crossing itself without an experienced local skipper. None of this rules out enjoying the area: Sotogrande, Estepona and the Bay of Algeciras remain excellent bases for a coastal outing, well away from the most frequently flagged zones.
