Renting a Boat in August: the Tips That Change Everything
Book early, aim for morning slots, look at neighbouring ports and keep a weather plan B: our practical advice for renting a boat at the height of August.
August is both the best and the worst month to rent a boat: best because the sea is warm and the days are long, worst because everyone had the same idea. Prices at their peak, fleets fully booked, anchorages crowded by noon. Yet with a few simple habits, you can still do very well.
Book early — genuinely early
For August dates, the best boats — affordable licence-free models, recent RIBs, well-located sailboats — are gone months in advance. If your dates are fixed, book in spring: you will choose rather than settle for what is left. Large families and groups should anticipate even more: big boats are few, and they are the first to disappear from the search results. Most platforms work with a deposit at booking, with the balance due later: securing a boat early does not mean paying everything upfront.
The morning slot, your secret weapon
In August, the difference between 9 am and 2 pm is spectacular: flat sea, the breeze still asleep, empty coves. By late morning, the best-known anchorages fill up and wake chop sets in. Take the first slot, anchor early in the cove you want, and let everyone else hunt for space at midday. Bonus: morning half-days are sometimes less in demand than afternoons.
Look at neighbouring ports
When everything is full — or over budget — in the star harbour of the area, the port next door often still has availability, gentler prices and easier access. On the French Riviera as in Corsica, a few kilometres by road are often enough to transform availability, while the cruising area stays exactly the same. Search by sailing area, not by town name — the savings often cover lunch for the whole crew.
Keep a weather plan B
Even in August, a blow can keep the fleet in port for a day. Before booking, read the offer’s cancellation and rescheduling terms — they vary from one rental company to another, so check each listing. On the day, if the operator suggests shifting your slot or changing area, listen: nobody knows their waters better. If the boat trip is the highlight of your holiday, keep a buffer day in the week. Finally, beware the afternoon thermal breeze: it rises with clockwork regularity on many August waters, and it is quite enough to turn a quiet trip home into a session of chop.
Compare, even in high season
Price gaps between platforms — 10 to 25% for the same boat, with service fees from 0 to 9% — do not vanish in August; quite the opposite. Boat-Comparator compares Boataround, SamBoat, Click&Boat and GlobeSailor in real time, with no affiliation, to spot the best-placed offer on your dates. In high season, a few minutes of comparison are often worth a real saving.
