BOAT-COMPARATOR Guide
Renting a boat in the Algarve: Vilamoura, Albufeira and the sea caves
Marinas, sea caves and strong Atlantic tides: what to know before renting a boat on the Algarve coast in Portugal.
The Algarve pairs turquoise water with ochre cliffs — a look often compared to the Caribbean, but with Atlantic swell and tides added in.
Vilamoura: the big marina
One of southern Europe's largest marinas, with a very deep rental fleet, from RIBs to yachts. Easy runs to Falésia beach or toward Faro and its lagoon nature park.
Albufeira and the sea caves
The stretch between Albufeira and Lagos holds the Algarve's famous sea caves, reachable only from the water — one of the strongest reasons to rent a boat here, since they are invisible from land.
The tide, subject number one
Unlike the Mediterranean, the Algarve sits on the Atlantic: the tidal range is measured in metres and affects anchorage depth, beach access and marina departure times. Always check the day's coefficient before leaving — our Atlantic tides guide covers the method.
West wind and swell
The Atlantic exposure brings more residual swell than the Mediterranean, especially outside sheltered bays. Operators cancel more readily when the sea is up: a safety reflex, not a whim.
Budget
The usual ranges apply: €100-250/day for a no-license boat in sheltered bays, €200-600/day for a RIB or motorboat. Compare offers in Vilamoura and Albufeira, and read our Atlantic tides guide before booking.
