Sailboat Rental in Lefkada: Easy Ionian Cruising
Sailboat rental in Lefkada (Lefkas): Meganisi, Kalamos and sheltered Ionian sailing away from the meltemi, with a realistic budget and booking advice.
Lefkada — often written Lefkas on charts — is the best sailing base in the Ionian Sea. Connected to the mainland by a bridge, surrounded by islands two or three hours' sail away and spared the worst of the meltemi, it is hard to find a more welcoming stretch of water for a week's cruise. Here is what makes it work, and what it costs.
Why start from Lefkada?
Lefkada marina, at the northern end of the island, is one of the largest in Greece and an easy drive from Preveza airport, about half an hour away. You board on Saturday afternoon, provision locally, and the next morning motor down the canal separating the island from the mainland into an exceptional cruising ground: Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Ithaca and Kefalonia all share the horizon. Many operators also offer departures from Nidri, further south on the east coast.
Meganisi and Kalamos: the stops that made the area's name
Meganisi is the star call: its northern coast, cut into miniature fjords, shelters the harbours of Spartochori and Vathy, where you moor for the night right in front of the tavernas. Kalamos, further south-east, rewards a slightly longer sail with a timeless harbour village where the taverna owner often helps take your lines. In between lie deserted coves, deep turquoise water and anchorages for almost every wind direction.
Legs are short, rarely more than three hours under way — which is also what makes the area so pleasant with children on board: the anchor goes down for lunch before anyone has had time to get bored. Provisioning is easy too, with minimarkets in most harbour villages and tavernas happy to feed a hungry crew for a fair price.
Cruising sheltered from the meltemi
Unlike the Cyclades, the Ionian escapes the meltemi pattern: the typical summer wind is a north-westerly thermal breeze that fills in during the early afternoon and dies at sunset. Calm mornings for motoring and swimming, afternoons of 10 to 20 knots for proper sailing — the ideal rhythm for a family crew or a first bareboat charter. Our guide to the Ionian Islands for easy sailing lays out a detailed one-week itinerary.
Budget and booking
Expect a sailboat at €300 to €700 a day, or €1,500 to €4,000 a week depending on size and season; add a skipper at €150 to €350 a day if nobody on board holds the required qualifications. The same boat often shows a 10 to 25% price gap between platforms: Boat-Comparator compares Boataround, SamBoat, Click&Boat and GlobeSailor live on sailboats for rent in Lefkada, with no affiliation to any of them.
