Sailing Charter: Sailing Around Corsica
Charter a sailing yacht to sail around Corsica: western gulfs, Bonifacio, Cap Corse and anchorages. Itinerary, season, budget and how to compare.
Sailing around Corsica is one of the great Mediterranean itineraries. Indented gulfs, turquoise water, wild anchorages and hilltop villages: the Île de Beauté rewards crews who take their time. A sailing yacht lets you follow the wind and reach coves no road can access, at a pace that leaves room for swimming and discovery. Each gulf has its own character, from the dazzling limestone of Bonifacio to the pink granite of the west coast, and its wild coast feels a world away. The island takes some effort but rewards every mile.
An itinerary shaped by the wind
Many start on the west coast — Ajaccio, Propriano — to string together the gulfs of Valinco and Porto, a World Heritage site. To the south, Bonifacio and its limestone cliffs, then the Lavezzi islands, make for an unforgettable anchorage at the tip of the island. Cap Corse and the Agriates desert, more exposed, depend on the weather. A full circumnavigation needs one to two weeks; failing that, an out-and-back along a single coast is still very rewarding and less tiring. Plan short legs to keep more time at anchor rather than under sail all day long. Provisioning in Ajaccio or Propriano before you leave saves pricey stops later.
The finest anchorages
Scandola reserve, the Piana calanques, the Lavezzi islands, Saleccia beach in the Agriates: Corsica lines up postcard anchorages. Some areas are regulated or closed to anchoring to protect the posidonia seagrass — check ahead and favour eco-moorings where they exist. Anchor preferably on light sand, allow for wind acceleration near the capes and keep a sheltered fallback for the night. An early start often earns you an empty cove before the other boats arrive. Holding is generally good on sand, but always dive on the anchor when the water is clear.
Season, budget and level
From May to October, with a preference for the calmer, quieter June and September. A sailing yacht hires for 300-700 €/day, or 1,500-4,000 €/week; without enough experience, add a skipper (150-350 €/day) who knows the mistral, the libeccio and the safe anchorages. Budget separately for fuel, provisioning and a deposit. Platform service fees run from 0 to 9 %. A small but experienced crew gets more out of an ambitious tour than a large group of beginners.
