Skipper: Cost, Role on Board and Tipping Etiquette
From €150 to €350 per day: what a skipper actually does, what the rate includes, and what custom says about tipping at the end of a boat rental.
The skipper is the line on the quote that makes people hesitate: €150 to €350 per day — is it really necessary? For many rentals it turns out to be the best money spent all holiday. But you should understand what the rate covers, what a skipper actually does on board — and what custom says about the tip.
How much does a skipper cost, and what does it include?
Expect €150 to €350 per day depending on the area, the season and the size of the boat. The rate pays for the skipper’s working day; on top of that, you generally cover his meals on board and, on a cruise, a cabin for him. On a yacht the question barely arises: a skipper is all but mandatory there, as our guide to crewed yacht charter explains.
What a skipper really does on board
A skipper does far more than hold the wheel. He prepares the trip (weather, route, provisioning), handles every manoeuvre — harbour, anchoring, sails —, keeps the crew safe and adapts the programme in real time when the wind shifts. He is also a local guide: he knows today’s sheltered cove, the restaurant worth the stop, the hour when the anchorage empties. Over a week he is usually happy to teach: many guests come home with genuine sailing basics.
With or without: how to decide
If you have no licence and the boat requires one, the question answers itself. If you hold a licence but lack experience in the area, a skipper turns a stressful outing into an actual day of holiday — especially with children or a large group on board. Confident sailors may hire one only for the first day, as a handover. Our guide with or without a skipper details the decision criteria.
Tipping: what custom says
A tip is never compulsory, but it is customary when the service has been up to standard. It is given at the end of the rental, directly to the skipper, preferably in cash and with a word of thanks. The amount is entirely at your discretion: the general spirit is to reflect the quality of the week or the day — availability, attentiveness, safety, good humour — rather than to apply a fixed scale. If there are several crew members, the tip is normally handed to the skipper, who shares it out.
Booking a skippered boat at the right price
The same skippered boat can vary by 10 to 25% depending on the platform, service fees included (0 to 9%). Boat-Comparator compares Boataround, SamBoat, Click&Boat and GlobeSailor in real time — with no affiliation — to spot the best offer, skipper included. Always check in the listing whether the skipper fee is included or payable on site.
