Drought and water restrictions: what changes at ports in summer

Boat washing, tap refills, quotas: what summer water restrictions actually change for a renter, and how to plan around them.

Dry summers keep recurring along the Mediterranean coast, and some harbour offices then apply water-use restrictions that directly affect boats at the dock — including the one you're renting for a few days.

What a restriction actually changes

Once a drought order is in effect, washing boats at the dock is often the first use to be suspended, alongside watering green spaces or filling swimming pools ashore. Refilling fresh water at dockside taps may also be limited to certain hours, or even to a set volume per boat depending on the harbour office.

What it doesn't change

Sailing itself isn't affected: only the management of drinking water at the dock is regulated. Rinsing the boat with seawater generally remains possible, and safety-related uses (deck wash-down, engine cooling) aren't targeted by these measures.

How to find out before you leave

The information is normally posted at the harbour office and on the port's website; the boat's owner or rental company will also know, and can confirm whether a fresh-water fill-up is included in the rental or left to you during your stay.

A pattern that repeats every summer

These restrictions aren't a one-off: they come back every dry summer across parts of the Mediterranean coast, with an intensity that varies with the previous winter's rainfall. Checking ahead isn't an exceptional precaution — it's a habit worth having for any peak-season rental.

Good habits for renters

Bringing a few water containers for drinking and washing reduces reliance on dockside taps, and using fresh water sparingly on board (short showers, limited dishwashing) avoids any unpleasant surprise at the end-of-rental inspection — worth checking in our departure checklist, along with the deposit and insurance guide.
