What to Pack for a Boat Rental: The List That Actually Matters
Sun protection, the right shoes, a dry bag, a layer for the ride back: what genuinely helps on the water, and what first-timers always forget.
You don't need professional sailing gear for a day on the water — but a handful of well-chosen items really do change the trip. Here's what matters most, and what people forget most often.
Sun protection, first and foremost
The sun hits harder at sea than on land, thanks to reflection off the water: a hat with a cord (so it doesn't blow off), sunglasses with a floating strap, and sunscreen reapplied every couple of hours are the essentials. Our heat and sun protection onboard guide covers the details.
Shoes suited to the deck
Street shoes mark the deck and slip on wet surfaces: pick water shoes or light-soled sandals that don't leave marks and come off easily for a swim off the boat.
A dry bag for electronics
Phone, ID, keys: spray and splashes happen more often than you'd think, even in calm water. A simple dry bag heads off most mishaps, especially on a RIB or an open motorboat.
A warm layer, even in summer
The chill on the way back, with the engine running and the apparent wind in your face, catches first-time renters off guard — even on a scorching day ashore. A light windbreaker or a sweatshirt is usually enough.
Food and a little cash
Many anchorages have no shop or restaurant nearby: a well-stocked cooler means you're never forced to cut the trip short. Our cooler and lunch aboard guide covers this. Keep some cash too, for the odd paid mooring or small harbour shop that doesn't take cards.
Check the rest with the operator
Everything else — life jackets, required safety gear — comes with the boat: our pre-departure checklist covers what to verify at the briefing rather than what to bring yourself.
