BOAT-COMPARATOR Guide
Renting a Wheelchair-Accessible Boat
Boarding height, deck width, access to the helm: what to check before booking a boat for a passenger with reduced mobility.
Boat rental isn't reserved for fully able-bodied crews: with a few precautions and the right questions to the owner before booking, a day at sea remains within reach for a passenger with reduced mobility.
The type of boat makes a real difference
A catamaran or a day cruiser with a flat, wide deck generally allows much easier movement than a sailboat, whose narrow cockpit and stepped companionway require more manoeuvring. License-free boats, sitting low on the water with little height difference between the pontoon and the deck, are often the simplest to board for a first outing.
Questions to ask before booking
- The height between the pontoon and the deck, and whether a gangway or boarding aid is available.
- The width of walkways and whether there are steps between the cockpit and the cabin.
- Whether a wheelchair or a stable seat can be set up in a shaded, secure spot.
- Whether there are handrails and enough space to manoeuvre near the helm.
The departure port matters too
Some pontoons are flat and level, others require climbing down a ladder or crossing an unstable floating walkway: ask the owner for a photo of the boarding pontoon before booking, especially outside the larger, well-equipped marinas.
With or without a skipper
A skipper (€150-350 a day) makes the outing much easier: they handle the manoeuvres, choose an easy-access anchorage for swimming, and can help with boarding, making the whole experience more relaxed for the whole family.
Check before you book
Boats genuinely designed for accessibility remain limited and inconsistent across platforms: the safest approach is to contact the owner or operator directly before paying, to confirm the boat and pontoon are suitable. Boat-Comparator displays contact details on every listing sourced from Boataround, SamBoat, Click&Boat and GlobeSailor.
