Yacht Rental in Ibiza: Formentera on a Day Charter
Yacht rental in Ibiza: a day charter across to Formentera's turquoise water, the anchorages to know, what the rate includes and how to compare platforms.
A yacht rental in Ibiza really has one flagship programme, and it is excellent: cross to Formentera, anchor in turquoise water worthy of the Caribbean, have lunch facing the beach and sail home at sunset. The crossing is short, the sea is usually manageable in summer and the choice of boats is vast. Here is how to organise the day and keep the budget under control.
Where do you leave from in Ibiza?
Departures are mainly from the marinas of Ibiza Town, below the fortified old quarter of Dalt Vila, and from Santa Eulalia or San Antonio depending on the operator. The pontoons are well organised and boarding is quick: safety briefing, boat handover, then a course due south. On a yacht the skipper is all but mandatory — a real asset here, as they know the regulated zones and the permitted anchorages around the protected posidonia meadows.
The classic day out to Formentera
After a crossing of around an hour depending on the boat, the first stop is Ses Illetes, the sand spit at the northern tip of Formentera: translucent water, pale seabed, lagoon atmosphere. Lunch on board or at one of the beach restaurants reached by tender, then an afternoon swimming off Levante beach or near the islet of Espalmador if conditions allow. Our guide to Ibiza and Formentera by boat details the anchorages and the local seabed protection rules.
Two habits noticeably improve the day: leave early to enjoy Ses Illetes before the midday crowds, and keep an eye on any southerly wind, which can make the anchorage uncomfortable in the afternoon — your skipper will then switch to Formentera's east coast or the coves of southern Ibiza, just as beautiful and far better sheltered. Finally, book the lunch table at the same time as the boat if you are aiming for a well-known address: in August everything is full weeks ahead.
What the rate includes
Yachts start from around €2,500 a day. The price generally covers the boat, the crew and basic insurance; fuel is very often billed on actual consumption at the end of the day — the Formentera crossing burns a fair amount, so ask for an estimate before setting off. Extras (paddleboards, catering, a hostess) and platform service fees of 0 to 9% complete the bill. On board, bring plenty of water and sun cream: shade is scarce in summer.
Booking at the right price
As elsewhere, the same yacht can show a 10 to 25% gap between platforms. Boat-Comparator queries Boataround, SamBoat, Click&Boat and GlobeSailor live and compares yachts for rent in Ibiza, with no affiliation to any platform. Book early for July and August, as the best units go fast; and for more ideas across the archipelago, our Balearic Islands boat rental page covers Mallorca and Menorca as well.
