BOAT-COMPARATOR Guide
Zadar or Split: which base to pick for a boat rental in Croatia?
Sea organ and the Kornati in the north, Diocletian's Palace and the central islands in the south: how to choose your departure base between Zadar and Split.
The two biggest charter bases in northern and central Dalmatia don't offer the same playground — the choice comes down as much to the archipelago you're after as to the mood of the departure town itself.
Zadar, gateway to the Kornati
Zadar is known for its Sea Organ, an installation that turns the movement of waves into music through pipes set beneath a stone staircase, designed by architect Nikola Bašić and opened in 2005. The town opens directly onto the Kornati archipelago, around a hundred protected islands and islets, covered in our guide to Zadar and Dugi Otok.
Split, the big city and Diocletian's Palace
Bigger and livelier, Split builds its entire old town around the palace of Roman emperor Diocletian, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It's also the most central base for reaching out to Brač, Hvar or Vis, as detailed in our guide to renting in Split.
The charm of water that "sings"
Zadar's Sea Organ illustrates, in its own way, what environmental psychology research documents more broadly: a landmark study by White and co-authors, published in 2010, found that the presence of a body of water within view — more so still when paired with a soothing sound or visual — heightens the restorative effect people report (see the study on Google Scholar) — a free bit of soul before you've even cast off.
Which one to choose
For a wild, largely undeveloped archipelago, head for Zadar. For a practical base with a wider choice of boats and direct access to central Dalmatia's most popular islands, Split remains the safe bet.
