Balearics or French Riviera: comparing the two for a week on a catamaran

Distances between stops, anchoring pressure, budget: the real differences between the Balearics and the French Riviera for a week under sail.

Two flagship destinations of the western Mediterranean, a few hours' flight apart, yet two rather different sailing styles: here's how to choose between the Balearics and the French Riviera for a week under sail.

Two coastlines, two different logics

In the Balearics, an archipelago of four main islands calls for longer crossings between Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera — modest but genuine offshore sailing, with real full days at sea. On the French Riviera, stops follow one another over short hops instead: Cannes, the Lérins Islands, Antibes and Saint-Tropez are all one to two hours apart, which suits a flexible schedule built around the day's weather, covered in our guide to the best anchorages on the French Riviera.

Anchoring pressure on both sides

Both coastlines rank among Europe's busiest waters at the height of summer. A study based on ship-traffic (AIS) data mapped anchoring pressure on coastal seabeds along the French Mediterranean, confirming very marked peaks in July-August in French Riviera bays (Deter, Lozupone, Inacio, Boissery & Holon, Boat anchoring pressure on coastal seabed: Quantification and bias estimation using AIS data, Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2017, see the study on Google Scholar). The Balearics see comparable pressure around Ibiza and Palma in high season; heading out early or aiming for June and September remains the best habit on both coasts.

Budget and season

On both destinations, budget €800-1,500/day or €3,000-8,000/week for a catamaran in high season, and €300-700/day for a sailboat. The French Riviera generally posts the highest peak-season rates in the Mediterranean in August; the Balearics often stay slightly more affordable outside Ibiza's exact summer peak.

Our take

For a crew that likes a fresh anchorage every evening without long crossings, the French Riviera, sailing out of Cannes or Saint-Tropez, remains hard to beat. For a more experienced crew after clearer water and less built-up islands, head for Ibiza and the Balearics, accepting slightly longer legs between stops.
